Wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process. As people get older, their skin becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic, which means it is less able to protect itself from damage. This leads to wrinkles, creases, and lines on the skin.
Facial expressions, such as smiling, frowning, or squinting, lead to the development of fine lines and wrinkles at a young age. These lines deepen as the person gets older.
What is Wrinkles?
Thanks to natural ageing, our skin experiences the loss of collagen each year and this often leads to the development of wrinkles. It can develop in areas that are often exposed to the sun such as face, neck, hands and even the body.
Although we can’t avoid factors that cause wrinkles, like prolonged sun exposure or genetics, there are many non-invasive ways to treat and improve the wrinkles.
What causes Wrinkles?
Besides repeated facial expressions that lead to wrinkles, there are also other factors such as stress, diet, smoking or environment that will cause wrinkles to develop over time. But, the two unavoidable factors that causes wrinkles are:
Natural Ageing
Ageing is one of the main factors for your skin to appear thinner and less elastic. The production of natural oil, fat and collagen decreases, and this causes loose, saggy skin and the formation of wrinkles.
Sun or UV Exposure
Unless we live on Mars, exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) light is the primary factor of early wrinkling. UV light speeds up skin’s ageing process as it breaks down collagen and elastin in skin, which causes skin to lose strength and flexibility.
Types of Wrinkles
Wrinkles are lines and folds that form in your skin. There are mainly two different types of wrinkles – Dynamic wrinkles and Static wrinkles.
Dynamic Wrinkles
Dynamic wrinkles are formed when you move a certain muscle group, especially when we make facial expressions such as smiling or frowning. Such wrinkles are not present when our muscles are relaxed.
For Dynamic wrinkles, the most common recommended anti-wrinkles treatment is BTX (Injectable Neurotoxins).
Static Wrinkles
Static wrinkles are due to the continuous formation of dynamic wrinkles over the years, resulting in such wrinkles to be permanent and are present even when we are not making any facial expressions.
For Static wrinkles, Face Fillers injections are common for effective static wrinkles removal with immediate results.
Where do Wrinkles commonly form?
There are many different types of pigmentation and the common ones are freckles, melasma, sun spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (post acne scars) in Singapore.
Forehead Wrinkles
Forehead wrinkles like forehead lines or frown lines are present when facial muscle contracts Loss of collagen can cause it to be more prominent or even permanent.
Eye Wrinkles
Skin around the eyes is very thin, besides ageing, rubbing or squinting the eyes can stretch your skin to form Crows feet or under eye wrinkles.
Cheek Wrinkles
Cheek wrinkles can be from repeatedly smiling and laughing. This can develop grooves, forming laugh lines or nasolabial folds, especially in saggy skin over time.
Chin Wrinkles
Marionette lines and mental creases are common chin wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions such as pouting or loss of volume over time.
Neck Wrinkles
Most people tend to overlook the skin around the neck. It can also appear thinner and wrinkled as we age. Too much screen time on your devices contributes to neck wrinkles too.
