Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin appears as a lack of radiance and comfort with intense, persistent tightness. The skin feels itchy, especially after washing and also has scales. This is an unusual, temporary state that is not necessary related to a “dry” skin type. This means oily skin can easily have times when it is dehydrated.

What is Dehydrated Skin?

Dehydrated skin should not be confused with dry skin – these are two different skin problems although symptoms are very similar.

Dehydrated skin lacks water while dry skin lacks nourishment such as essential fatty acids. Dehydration often leads to irritation and sensitivity, and can affect all skin types, including combination to oily skin and even dry skin.

Good thing is that dehydration is often temporary and you can definitely restore back the lost glow and radiance!

Causes of Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin is a temporal skin state with constant increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Dehydrated skin looks dull, rough, flaky and scaly and it usually feels dry, tight, inflamed and itchy. Fine lines are more visible and skin lacks radiance, tingles and is uncomfortable. In some cases, it may even peel.

Sensitive and irritable

As skin’s moisture barrier is disrupted, it lacks the ability to self-protect from external stressors, causing the skin to be more prone to redness, itchiness and irritation.

Prone to breakouts

Skin produces more sebum to compensate for the lack of moisture in the skin and excess sebum together with dirt and other debris leads to congestion and acne.

Dull and tired-looking skin

Dehydration affects skin cell turnover performance, which results in the accumulation of dead skin on the surface, giving you that dull and aged looking complexion.

Visible under-eye circles

Lack of fluids causes skin to look dull and sunken, due to the close proximity to the underlying bones and blood vessels to be prominent, causing dark eye circles.

Accentuated fine lines

Dehydrated skin appears thinner as our skin loses its ability to hold onto moisture and giving that bouncy and supple look, causing the appearance of fine lines.

Cause of Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin is a skin condition that is caused by many factors that deplete your skin’s water content, resulting in a less supple appearance.

  • Weather and seasonal changes such as the cold, winter, wind, pollution or UV rays.

  • Unhealthy diet that lack of fresh produce.

  • Lifestyle choices such as lack of sleep, smoking, alcohol or caffeine consumption.

  • Emotional factors such as stress or fatigue.

  • Cosmetic products that are too strong, aggressive, detergent, stripping or drying, basically wrong for your skin.

Dehydrated skin is temporary and can be relieved with a combination of treatments and lifestyle changes.
