Acne Scars

Acne can create scars both physical and psychological, leaving a lasting impact long after a breakout clears up. Some types of acne are more likely than others to leave scars, and how you treat your skin during an acne flare-up can make a big difference.

What Causes Acne Scars?

Acne scars are the result of an inflamed acne. When acne pores are engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria, it causes pores to swell and lead to a breakout in the follicle wall. This penetrates the skin deeply and damages tissue beneath.

However the skin heals itself to clear acne, it produces Collagen-A substance for skin structure support. When too little collagen is produced, sunken scars or depressions are formed as skin heals, such scars are known as atrophic acne scars.

Types of Acne Scars

The lack of collagen produced during skin healing after an acne breakout forms twisted bands between skin layers that pull downwards and sink in.

This results in depressed acne scars and the 3 common types of acne scars are ice pick scars, boxed scars and rolling scars.

Keloid

Keloid scars are mounds that form as a result of the body trying to heal itself post-inflammation, but your body accidentally produces too many cells.

How to prevent Acne Scars from forming?

Prevention is key. Acne is usually temporary, but acne scars can be permanent. As much as scars are part of the skin’s normal healing process, there are ways to prevent acne scars from forming.

Seek Treatment Immediately

When you have acne, it is best to get it under control as soon as possible. The longer the delay of untreated acne, the greater the risk of acne scarring.

Reduce Acne Inflammation

Inflammatory acne such as acne nodules or acne cysts are more likely to leave scars than non-inflammatory breakouts.

Inflamed acne tends to penetrate deep into the skin causing damages to the skin, so it is best to calm inflammation and avoid doing anything that will further irritate your skin.

Avoid Picking at Acne

Do not give in to the temptation of picking or squeezing a pimple. By doing so can force debris deeper, resulting in an infection and worsening inflammation.

This can extend the healing time and leave a permanent acne scar.
